There has been a lot of discussion on Twitter about using ☺ to indicate Retweet. That's horrible, especially if you're Twittering from your phone. But, the argument goes, ☺ is one character versus 2 (RT) for Retweet. But I think that we have a bunch of unused characters that I feel should be defined and used. So, here is my Authoritative guide to Tweetology definitions:
| Symbol |
Meaning/Replacing |
| * |
RT (Retweet), representing the many placeholder in DOS as you are rebroadcasting to many more people something someone has already tweeted (thanks Mike Amundsen) |
| % |
OH (Overheard), representing the heads of two people separated by a cube wall and indicating that the tweeter heard something over the cube wall that was twitterworthy. |
| @ |
@ Pointing to another tweeter. Not new, but I did say the guide was Authoritative! |
| # |
# Tag used for searching, see #sqlputdowns. |
| ♥ |
Tell someone how much you <3 something! |
| ♣ |
Indicate a topic that should be clubbed to death |
| ♠ |
Attempt to bury a tweet |
So scrap the ☺ and stick with *.
